Turning point in the matter of the Grodziec Slaski amphibians came thanks to Provincial Council of Nature Conservation – then investor (Katowice Dept. of the General Management of State Roads and Highways) recommended assembly of wire fence with little diameter mesh on the both sides of the clearway on the stretch from Kowale stream to the road guiding from Grodziec to a railway station (pic. 1). It might be useful to mention that on the appointment in the contractor seat (SKANSKA) in Grodziec Slaski, where details was established, the Voivode representative was absent. During meeting the „natural side” was calling for sooner signalised necessity of monitoring of putted solutions effectiveness and emphasizing, against investor stand, that taken actions, although decisive for amphibians protection, are not fully complete. It was also emphasized that blocking and crossing of migratory patterns should be compensated by construction of the alternative water bodies and stretch of the ring road supported with wire fence with little diameter mesh should be longer.

Wire fence with little diameter mesh was mounted on the typical wire net in March 2007. Unfortunatelly, against sugestions, it was not sinked into the ground, but only covered with soil. Acoustic screen, against investor assurance, from the moment of conctruction up to now is not tight barrier – I have observed amphibians which in large numbers pass through a cracks in the acoustic screen to the road. Moreover, precipitation have washed out during less than half a year part of the soil which covered the bottom of the wire fence with little diameter mesh. Consequently, amphibians come to the net, migrate along its lengthiness, find their way to leaks and then they enter the highway, where they die in large numbers. Degradation of the wire fence net still progress. Moreover, plants which growe along net make it easier for animals to enter to the road. Described conditions point out the incomprehension of sense of activities leaded by investor and his contractors.

Acoustic screen, according to investor and provincial services of environmental protection, stop amphibians from entering on the road.

Wire fence, according to investor and provincial services of environmental protection, stop amphibians from entering on the road.

Environmental protection by provincial services – without Silesian Provincial Office representatives.

Wire fence lying freely on grass – amphibians go under wire fence without effort.

Degradation of the wire fence net progress still.

Wire net fence mounted with no view to permanence – rains easily wash out soil which cover lower part of net.

Wire fence mounted with no view to permanence is not tight barrier for migration of amphibians.

Wire net and acoustic screen join not tightly – next “gate” for amphibians.

Crack in acoustic screen – animals enter on road without obstacle in 2008.

Crack which officially do not exist in acoustic screen.

Little animals can freely pass under acoustic screen.

Acoustic screen with cracks is not tight barrier for little animals.

Next “gate” for animals.
